Post-doctoral and/or Instructor positions (3-4) are available immediately in a newly established Program in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at Baylor College of Medicine (Houston, TX). Funded by a recent $1M philanthropic award, this new translational Program will focus on developing novel targeted therapeutics for endocrine-related cancers (prostate, breast cancer) by targeting the nuclear hormone receptor coactivators (Science 2008;322(5906):1395-9; Mol Cell 2008;31(6):835-49; Mol Cell 2008;29(4):465-76).

Under the leadership of Dr Bert W. O’Malley, the Tom Thompson Distinguished Service Professor, and recipient of the 2007 National Medal of Science and the 2011 Ernst Schering Prize, the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at Baylor College of Medicine is a pioneer in the field of gene regulation, steroid receptors and transcriptional coactivators (Science 322:1395-1399 (2008); Mol Cell 37(3), 321-332 (2010); Cell 29:1-16 (2007); Mol Cell 26:831-842 (2007); Mol Cell 25, 765-778 (2007); Cell 124: 381-392 (2006); Mol Cell 15:1-20 (2004); Science 279:1922-1925 (1998); Science 270:1354-1357 (1995)), providing a rich scientific environment with many unique and unparalleled research training opportunities.

Minimum qualifications: Highly motivated individuals with PhD in molecular biology and demonstrated competence and experience in the biology of cancer, preferably prostate or breast cancer and/or nuclear hormone receptors (preferably androgen or estrogen receptor) and a record of research productivity. Technical expertise in standard basic molecular and cellular techniques, including cell culture, transfections/transductions, siRNA, molecular cloning, plasmid isolation, and animal studies is a necessity. Candidates must be enthusiastic, self-motivated, dedicated to science and problem solving, with organizational skills and effective at working independently and leading projects, while also collaborating and assisting the team in its programmatic research goals. Attention to detail and ability to work on multiple projects is expected.

These positions offer salaries commensurate with experience (ranging from $36K to $50K/year, based on experience) and opportunities for advancement. Highly skilled and experienced applicants with documented high-level productivity will be considered for a position at the level of Instructor, with a salary ranging from $50K to $80K/year, based on experience.

NOTE: Preference will be given to candidates with an outstanding publication record in high-impact journals.

Interested candidates should email their CV and 3 names of references to mitsiade@bcm.edu.

  • Postdoc in Cell Biology, Neurobiology, Biochemistry at the Friedrich-Schiller University Jena, Germany

As a further support of our team we are seeking a

    Postdoc

(TV-L E13 – Project funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG); 3 years – extension and/or Habilitation possible)

    - to study cytoskeletal and synaptic cytomatrix structures in neuronal development and synaptic function and plasticity.

The Institute for Biochemistry I at the FSU Jena provides a stimulating research environment with excellent technical equipment in a recently completely reconstructed building right in the centre of Jena – one of the top-ranking and most lively biotech cities of Germany (ranked 2nd in the career atlas of all German cities – right behind Munich!).

The aim of our internationally well-known research team is to gain a molecular understanding of neuronal network formation, function and plasticity. We are especially interested in revealing how the cytoskeletal and specialized pre- and the postsynaptic cytomatrix structures underlying the plasma membrane as well as the (cortical) actin cytoskeleton in general contribute to neuronal development and function.

We are currently studying several molecular players at the membrane/actin interface and are characterizing their role in both cytoskeletal and membrane dynamics. As actin nucleation is the rate-limiting step of filament formation, we are focusing on the spatial and temporal control of actin nucleation machineries, such as the Arp2/3 complex and Cobl (e.g. see Ahuja et al., 2007 Cell; Dharmalingam et al., 2009 J. Neurosci.; Schwintzer et al., 2011 EMBO J.).

We are seeking a productive addition to our team for generation and phenotypical analyses of KO-animals (several already available), for studying membrane and actin dynamics in primary neuronal cultures and tissue sections and for molecular/mechanistic studies e.g. using in vitro reconstitutions of actin dynamics and of membrane interactions and modulations, respectively.

Besides a solid theoretical and practical knowledge of modern cell and/or neurobiology, applicants should have experience in the generation and analyses of KO mice, in advanced methods of light microscopy and/or in the biochemical and biophysical methods required for studying actin cytoskeletal dynamics and membrane interactions both in vitro and in vivo.

Candidates need to be distinguished by a high motivation to succeed in science and to work independently. However, it is also crucial to integrate into our team smoothly and to be a kind, efficient and reliable team-player.

Starting date is flexible. Due to the internationality of both our group and life in the young and vibrant university town Jena, knowledge of the german language is not required but fluent English is a prerequisite.

For further information please also see our webpage (http://www.biochemie.uniklinikum-jena.de/Biochemie+I/Stellenangebote.html).

Please send your complete application (incl. 2-3 ref. addresses) to

Prof. Dr. Britta Qualmann & Prov. Doz. Dr. Michael M. Kessels
    britta.qualmann@mti.uni-jena.de
Institut für Biochemie I, Jena University Hospital – Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena
    Nonnenplan 2-4, D-07743 Jena

The FSU Jena is an equal opportunity employer promoting the advance of women in science.

Jena is ranked second in the German career atlas (right behind Munich)!
“That Jena scores so well is the result of a successful combination of research, education and economics.”
“University: 25% of all inhabitants are students and Jena thus is a very young and lively city. The job market is hot.”
“Jena is well-known as internationally leading place for optics. Companies, such as Carl Zeiss, Jenoptik and Schott set global standards.”
